I never understood that criticism. As for Reynolds, the good thing about him is that he is such a scientific hardliner, no magic nonsense anywhere. Well, he is a physicist, after all. The first book, Revelation Space, is so much action, advanced physics and terrific plots that you don´t mind about the poor character descriptions...
